09/25/2020—The Magnolia High School Swim & Dive team kicked off their 2020-2021 season with Magnolia West on Friday at the MISD Inter-Squad Meet. The Bulldog swimmers started things off in great form, with the Black team scoring 150 points and Maroon earning 114 points. Magnolia’s Diving team had a great showing as well.

FUN + HARD WORK

The annual MISD Inter-Squad Meet, which takes place at the Michael D. Holland Aquatic Center, is an opportunity for the athletes to have a good time and for the coaches to assess where their athletes are at. Each swimmer and diver sets a list of personal goals at the beginning of the season, and the inter-squad meet allows everyone to determine where they are and what they need to do to achieve those goals moving forward. Head swimming coach Jared Kaminski said, “We had some good swims for this early and limited training. We are still remembering how to race. No one has raced since February/March. It is a skill they just have resharpen.”

Covid-19 has also caused UIL to add some new rules to how meets are conducted, and this year’s inter-squad meet also provided a low-stress opportunity for both competitors and spectators to learn the new rules to keep everyone safe in this unusual season.

The events list is shorter for the inter-squad meet, with individual swimmers competing in 50-yard freestyle, butterfly, backstroke, and breaststroke races. Relays are mixed, with the 200-yard medley relay kicking off the meet and the 200-yard free relay ending it. Four MHS female divers and one male diver also competed earlier in the afternoon.

MAGNOLIA DIVING

The Magnolia Dive team looked in great form to start the season with senior Jada Shorter leading the girls and freshman Jake Bigler taking first for the boys. Dive results were:

Girls
1.) Jada Shorter
2.) Sam Jones
3.) Bri Simon
4.) Sara Bedolla

Boys

Reinecke, and Lewis and the Magnolia Black B relay of Moran, Hoffmann, Montes, and B. Reinecke rounded out the first event of the season with great showings.

The individual events kicked off with the 50-yard mixed freestyle event, led by McKinley Mouton, Gustavo Ott, and Nathan Scott. Kayley Turner led the girls, followed by Noelle Marsh and Sarah Culberson. Mixed 50-yard fly was led by McKinley Mouton, Nathan Scott, and Nicholas Moylan for the boys and Kailey Turner, Sarah Culberson, and Noelle Marsh for the girls.

Rounding the individual events was the mixed 50-yard breaststroke, with Claire Culberson, Kelsey Portwood, and Anneke Anderson taking the first three girls’ spots, and McKinley Mouton, Gustavo Ott, and Mark Carver leading the boys.

The mixed 200-yard freestyle relay ended the evening, with the Magnolia Black A relay of Howse, Rubio, Draeger, and Scott taking first with a time of 1:46.98. The Magnolia Maroon A relay came in second with a time of 1:47.20 brought by S. Bullock, Tice, Anderson, and Carver. OFF TO A GREAT SEASON

The 2020 MISD Inter-Squad Meet kicked the swim and dive season off to a great start with all of the Magnolia Swim & Dive athletes showing terrific effort and promise. “They swam great and had awesome team spirit throughout the evening,” said Coach Kaminski.

While 2020-2021 will undoubtedly be an unusual season due to ever-changing Covid-19 guidelines, it also promises to be a terrific season with determined athletes performing their best despite unprecedented circumstances. Stay tuned to watch the Bulldogs take on their competitors with passion this year!
