Magnolia West started strong and ran away from its rival and host Magnolia in a 70-32 win at The Doghouse in District 19-5A play Tuesday night.

The Mustangs (20-6, 3-1) have won three straight district games — and seven of eight overall — since losing their 19-5A opener to Texas Association of Basketball Coaches No. 19 Bryan Rudder on Dec. 17. The only loss since then was to district foe College Station, ranked 18th in the state, in tournament play on Dec. 27.

“I think we’ve responded pretty well,” Magnolia West coach Darcie Moore said. “We started out with the loss and now we’ve regrouped a little bit and we’re coming on. I’m pretty pleased with the way we’re playing defensively. I’ve asked them to turn it up a little bit and they have.”
